Geographic names

It refers to the names of locations and features, both man-made and natural ones, each with a unique identity on the Earth's surface, such as regions, mountains, valleys, or any feature of public or historical significance. The General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information is the official reference for all matters related to geographic names in the Kingdom. The National Committee for Geographic Names has been established, comprising 21 government entities, with the Authority designed as the host institution and entrusted with the chairmanship.

Developing mechanisms and methodologies

specific to geographic names activities and monitoring their implementation in accordance with the national geospatial data governance framework.

Collecting, inventorying, and documenting

geographic names, as well as updating them, and standardizing their spelling to ensure the unification of geographic names at the national level.

Managing the geographic names database

and working on its development and updating. This database includes more than 135,000 geographic names.

Preparing a national indexed gazetteer

Preparing a national indexed gazetteer that includes all geographic names in the Kingdom in both Arabic and Latin scripts.

Romanization

This refers to standardizing the pronunciation of geographic place names in Latin script to align with the Arabic pronunciation.

Geographic Names Platform

The platform is considered an official national reference for geographic names in the Kingdom, by providing descriptive and geospatial data associated with those names to introduce the Kingdom and the spatial and historical dimensions of the geographic names within it as part of the cultural identity. The platform aims to enable various entities to access geographic names and their approved extents on national maps, serving as a window to highlight the Kingdom's leadership in the field of geographic names.
